Why 60% of Vendor MDF Goes Unused (And How to Claim Your Share)

Every quarter, a significant amount of vendor MDF goes completely unclaimed. Marketing Development Fund exists specifically to help partners grow, yet somewhere between the vendor’s budget and the MSP’s marketing plan, the money simply does not get used. Understanding why this happens is the first step towards making sure your business is not leaving cash on the table.

The roots of the problem sit on both sides of the relationship. On the vendor side, channel marketing teams are often small and stretched thin. With limited resources and pressure to show results, vendor MDF tends to flow towards whoever asks the loudest, usually the largest partners with dedicated marketing teams already in place. Smaller and mid-sized MSPs, who could arguably benefit the most from this funding, are frequently left unaware that the money exists at all.

Even when MSPs do know about vendor MDF, the application process can be a barrier in itself. Convoluted forms, unclear criteria and a lack of guidance mean that many owners simply give up before they get started. Add to this the fact that most MSPs lack dedicated marketing capability in house, and it becomes clear why so many opportunities slip by unclaimed.

There is also a mismatch in expectations. Vendors frequently want to see measurable return on investment within a single quarter, a timeline that rarely reflects how MSP sales cycles actually work. Building trust with a new prospect, running a campaign, and converting that into a signed client takes months, not weeks. When vendors judge success too quickly, funding gets pulled back and partners lose confidence in the process altogether.

The good news is that this pattern can be broken. MSPs who take a proactive approach and build a proper plan before approaching a vendor put themselves in a completely different position. Rather than making a vague request for funding, come to the conversation with clarity. What sector are you targeting? What is your revenue goal? What activities will you run to get there? A well-structured plan, even a simple one, gives your account manager something concrete to take back to their business and champion on your behalf.

Case studies matter too. Vendors are constantly looking for proof that their products work in the real world. If you can bring evidence of results you have already delivered for clients, you become a far more attractive partner to fund. This kind of proof point does more to unlock vendor MDF than almost anything else you can offer.

Relationships remain at the heart of it all. The strength of your connection with your account manager and the wider channel team often determines how seriously your requests are taken. Vendors want to work with partners they trust, and trust is built over time through consistent, honest communication rather than a single ask for cash.

If your MSP has never claimed vendor MDF, or you tried once and found the process too difficult, now is a good time to revisit it. Start with one vendor, ideally one connected to a genuine growth goal within your business. Put together a simple plan, share your targets, and ask directly for support. The funding is there. It is simply waiting for the right approach.
